Are all IT jobs boring??? IT folks, let's hear from you!
#21
I would think it depends on where you go as to how boring it is. I work in sales for a sheet metal manufacturer, and our IT guy seems to be busy most all the time. There is always something to troubleshoot whether it'* hardware or a program. I could see a help desk position being boring, but if you are the only IT guy for a company that has a lot of computers and special programs to deal with, I could see it being a lot more busy.

Yah Grimm, that'* part of our problem--we are way overstaffed. If they have the money available for the position, they keep it filled. Makes no sense.
By the way, I used to draft sheet metal HVAC plenums. Who are you with? I worked for SEMCO, Inc.

Just a small 100 person sheet metal shop. Most would consider us a job shop really. www.dewysmfg.com

i will NEVER go to school for a IT job, waste of $ IMO
Spend $30-40 in school.... get a 30-40K a year job...
OR
Not goto school and still be making 30-40K a year with out having 30K in loans
I work with about 40-50 people at unisys. about 50% of then all have degrees in Computers. They are making the same $ as i am.

I love my IT job. Sure, it took 5 boring ones to get to this one.. but it proves they are not 'all' boring.
Just as a small sample... we have about 15 dell machines (p4 2.8ghz) that are out of warranty and being replaced (they all still work). He says "hey.. why don't you guys set them all up on a cluster and try and solve this RSA semiprimes problem contest."
He is an older guy and loves to teach us stuff. Anything I don't know, he makes me figure it out and won't tell me the answer, etc.
I work for a cancer center. There is a lot of $$ around here (sadly, actually) and we have good hardware.. my voice is heard, etc.
It'* cool and for the first time, I still enjoy my job after 5 months working there.

yea i liked my job for the first 6 months.. then Management change... then it started going to hell. iv now almost been there 1 year.
People getting laid off... Supervisors and team lead getting fired...
Unisys is going to hell. DO NOT get a job working for them!
from Dec 15th to no about 35 techs got Laid off and 3 Sups and 4 team leads. the Sups and team leads have not been replaced and the 35 techs where replaced with 15 contractors
and the call volume has not gone down. but we are 20 techs down so ts busy every day and queues are not making there Stats.

Again, tech support is only one type of IT work.
Education may not be necessary to succeed in tech support, but you'll eventually reach a plateau where you can't advance or make more money because of the lack of education.

if your talking Programming or Network Management.. well those are like not even int he same class as Tech support. and those yes you need something.
But i want more of the Hands on Tech support witch can pay 50+ easily
Just that most of those jobs are taken and no ones giving those up because they are the best Tech support jobs to have.
Rochester has Non left. iv been looking for 3 years. its all Phone support.
Im starting to look in Ohio. im really starting to think about moving there. Soon.
