its just where your from, and who your around. I say aint, yall, yes mam, stuff like that becuase thats how i was raised and thats what i'm around now. Yes sometimes I speak "proper" English, but most of the time i speak the way i feel comfortable speaking, which is with i guess you could call them the classic southern words, just like "eh" is to Canada. Its only dialect.

down here, if you dont have a southern accent, you stick out like a black and blue thumb. i find it funny. i can spot yankee'* a mile away. the 2nd best indicator is when someone gets unsweet tea and doesnt add anything...yuck! (only good SWEET tea for me)

Well last year we went to a family reunion, and all my relatives speak french, so of course I had a french accent, then PDad and I headed on down to WCBF, and once again I picked up Bill'* funky accent.....So you can well imagine how werid I sounded. French Canadian with a touch of American I even said "y'all" once.

I usually pick up on accents without even realizing it but my boss says I still talk like a yankee and he can't understand me (even after 5 years of working for him and living in MS since 1997).
Every now and then something southern will slip out of my mouth but I mostly talk like I'm still in Chicago.
