Also, I wonder when you say you had to remove the ignition switch......are we talking ignition switch or ignition lock cylinder?

Vehicle running: dash lamp comes on but not blink with indicator to R; still to R, hazards on - then dash lamps and all 4 exterior lamps flash; hazards off with still to R - dash lamp only on (no blink); with R off, hazards on again then off - R indicator same...on but no blink.

AH HA: with R indicator on break lights go out and all R lamps (dash & Front & Rear too) just on;

with no indicator: only all break lights;

with L indicator on: all left lamps blink and middle and top break lights on.

Also forgive me...I am sure I meant lock cylinder: had to make a 90° tool to depress pin to remove it so could get the steering column cover off

Just a hunch:

1. Disconnect trailer
2. Disconnect all connections to brake pedal switch
3. Test all that stuff again

Any changes in behavior?

I'm guessing the brake-for-shifting out of Park circuit is crossed with some other stuff in the steering column or nearby.

I will try that, thanks. It will take me a while to get to it...hopefully later today. Thinking back, I was having issues of similar but different nature when replaced multi-function switch. Your guess is making me wonder if there is something that caused last one to go out too. Thanks again.

Default Update

Tech II & CC,

Ok, finally had time and felt like doing at least a cursory look under dash without tearing out the panels. Anyway... feeling around the top of break pedal I believe what is the shift-lock (actuator?) is loose - (that is: doesn't it mount on a rod that runs thru top of pedal arm, and "supposed" to be held on by like maybe a half-moon clip or the like?) - actually, it will come off the rod bc there is no clip holding it on.

So, let'* forget about the lights for a sec...when that thing I just so eloquently described is mounted on the rod, the ignition chime comes on when depressing the pedal (vehicle off with key out). If I take it off of the rod, no chime.

Note: break lights and indicators still act the same

Now...I noticed when I operated my indicators that I could hear the contacts in a relay(?) about the size of a pack of Camel (non-filter) which is in a bank due North of emergency brake and the closest to the brake. I felt the object while working indicator and could tell that when turned to R, it would contact like 1.5 times and quit...obviously to the L it made appropriate contact.

I haven't dug in any further. Prolly pull lower dash out tomorrow and look for nicked wires/shorts.

...that is where I be with this dilemma at the moment.

Thanks again!

Finale:...well, I got busy with real work and thought trying finish thia project myslef would be too overwhelming, so took my ride to my mechanic. He insisted it was Multi-function switch. My local Carquest guys warrantied my old one for me; mechanic put the new one in, and works fine. Who would have thunk it would have been the "new" switch.. I would have never tried that, so it is good I didn't personally peruse it further? I will say, however, the one I personally installed had a different "feel" about it...was really tight if that makes any sense. Also, it was not black-black...but just a super-dark grey. This latest one feels and looks just like my oiginal.

Thanks again guys!

I will say, I did get my electrical issue fixed on my 4-wheeler: a bad regulator - which my wheeler mechanic said he wouldn't have guessed. I just followed the steps in the shop manual...

Thanks for letting us know how it turned out. I was guessing electrical crosses also, but wasn't questioning the multifunction. This was a good one for the forum to learn.
