I've heard that on some years, the mileage is also saved into the ABS computer. Again, this is something that only a dealer can check, but it may provide the real mileage.

I just found out the build date of the cluster is 2002. I have been searching online and running VINs of possible vehicles. I found a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (Stepside) with the calibrations I pulled from this cluster. Check out the TIS2WEB on this VIN: 1GCEC14X63Z276547 w/ hardware: 12182146. Also, I spoke with a guy who sells used clusters on ebay, he said it just plugs in and would display mileage on cluster from the vehicle it came out of.

go to autozone and have them scan it. i think almost all cars from 96- have to have it stored in the pcm for emissions reasons.

Gm does have a special policy on the clusters, but they won't send you a cluster with whatever mileage you tell them it has. If it'* done right, they pull the part number, mileage, and engine hours out of the cluster. When the rebuilt cluster arrives, it is programmed with the hours and miles read from the failed cluster using tis2web. On this particular truck, the mileage is only stored in the cluster. So the mileage you have now is what the donor vehicle had on it. The dealer can only program mileage into a rebuilt cluster once- right out of the box.

Ebay has two aftermarket vendors that will sell you this cluster, rebuilt- with the mileage you stated. GM fought the recall on these high failure odometers, and would only replace for free if under 70k miles. One can spend over 1k at the dealer to have it replaced, or under $200 using a rebuilt aftermarket. The key is that all 2002-2206 full size GM SUVs likely have had a odometer fail and that one needs to find a other method to determine true mileage, as the aftermarket cluster rebuilders will set the mileage at any requested number.
