Pretty cool!

Hopefully they come through.

They just trademarked the Electra nameplate, I'm looking forward to seeing what happens there: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a3...tra-trademark/

Electric cars are so much simpler than gas cars, I wonder what the bean counters will cheapen on these things.

I'm curious to see what happens when people have to start replacing the main battery packs in these things. I found the typical cost for a Volt to be around $9,000 for the battery, not including the labor.

I found a Tesla RO that showed $16,000 for a battery replacement.

Gone are the days for the average low-income family to keep a car on the road. Hell, even some middle-income families struggle monthly even with a gas vehicle.

I tend to agree, but I think it will happen similar to how it happens today.

1. I can't afford much of a car.
2. I buy a crummy one that runs today.
3. It lasts a year or something, nickel and diming them the whole time, they pay a penny and nickel to repair, then has an expensive failure.
4. Now the car is worth 10% of what it was moments before.
5. Proceed to step 1

. . . but with an electric car there won't be many maintenance and repair issues for them to neglect as often happens in this situation. The electrics mostly just have a battery to gradually go bad and occasionally need tires and sometimes brake pads . . . as opposed to gas cars where they get bought at this stage, then oil changes get neglected, transmission issues as well, coolant leaks out, etc. Then the transmission gives out or the engine comes apart or etc. etc. then it'* junk because nobody will pay to fix it.

When they test drive the nearly worn out electric car and it does okay, the battery will probably last a little while. I guess the bright side of paying more for the well-used electric car at this level will be that it will probably give them better service before the battery becomes unusable and they have to move on to the next one.

I believe the batteries have a limited 8 year warranty. There must be a slow degradation over time that limits range, especially in colder climates. (battery heater used/drain applied while parked)
I'd like to see the fine print. Example: Tesla has placed a limited warranty with 100,000 mile clause for battery.
The obvious benefit is low maintenance, no oil changes & no gasoline used, Gas here now is now $7 per gallon.,

All the first Edition Silverado'* were sold out in 12 minutes !!
GM interviewed about lower costs and broader future accessibility.
New models are also mentioned in the video.

I definitely agree on the fine print.

I agree on the cold also.

It'* going to be interesting to see how folks handle EVs in cold. I bet lots of garages will get cleaned out to make room for the cars once folks figure that one out.

When it was -20c here, I got to talk to an EV owner.
He stated that you leave them plugged in, as It keeps the car interior warm and the battery topped up.
His was plugged in to a powerful home charger system. Ev was left outside as his garage was already full with other gas cars, before 11 inches of snow fell....
Suddenly the gas powered RAV 4 with real snow tires was outside, and the EV with all season radials was now in the garage!

I've been in super cold temp in Saskatchewan, Ontario & Quebec Canada. Honestly you don't see too many Ev'* on the road then. I'd be worried the batteries may not last long then.
Here is a link regarding EV'* and winter battery performance. from the Canadian Automotive Association. (Quebec Canada)

Yeah, it'* neat that they keep the interior warm etc. but I wonder what the electric bill looks like at the end of that billing cycle.

Personally I think I'd be scared to drive an EV in those conditions. The low rolling resistance tires combined with the weight combined with range anxiety with the heat running. I don't know how much battery it takes to sit still in a traffic jam and stay kinda warm, but I know I can do it for hours in a petroleum powered car.

Probably just a matter of learning the new way when the inevitable arrives . . . and hoping there is an army of Amazon charger drones to save the day when I'm 90 years old stuck in a newfangled electric nightmare robo pod in a blizzard-induced traffic jam staring at all of the abandoned gas stations as far as the eye can see.

Even though this video is about a Tesla and charging with a regular 120 volt charger overnight at home, her bill was only $36 for covering 700 miles in a month.
Shelby helps to explain the real cost & lists KW hour pricing, depending on which State you are from and much more !
If you want to skip the home give-a-way, go to 2 minutes and 33 seconds.

Ah. Los Angeles in June/July.

I'd bet she uses the air conditioning very little and gets lots of energy back from motor-braking.

I saw a a lot of sort-of math of a small snapshot of the vehicle'* usage, but it does make a lot of sense, especially there. I wonder what the TCO looks like though, compared to a similar gasser . . . and where the ROI is.
