why isn't DRL an option?

As for me, I like them. Anything that will help prevent idiots from pulling out in front of me is fine by me.
I know this topic provokes flamewars, but what exactly is the problem here? Has anyone noticed that there are also _red_ lights on the _back_ of the car that light up when you step on the brake, whether you want them to or not? Why are you wanting to disable the white lights in front but not the red ones in back?

I can see how some people would not like them.........
Don't matter to me .....except..........
Having them.......reduces my insurance rates.......as it does everyone else that has them
That means I got more $$$ for "Stuff" to my Bonny........ :P

I like how the DRL'* are on the Regals.. they just use the two center turn signals as teh DRL'* and those are on all of the time instead of actual headlights. They actually look kinda cool like that. (and are plenty bright to notice)

Here'* a quote from http://www.lightsout.org/disable.html
First off, as of November, 2002, there are no federal laws in the US that mandate DRLs on passenger vehicles. If your dealer refuses to disconnect your DRLs, saying "they're a mandatory safety item," then your dealer is lying.
This site seems to be legit, but any Joe Shmoe can make a web page. Anybody know if there'* any laws passed after this date?

Ok, they WERE required in 99. However, I recall a Citizen'* Advocacy group a couple years ago trying to get that changed. It'* possible they were successful. If the NHTSA had data that the DRL'* didn't make a difference in the number of daytime accidents, they could have dropped it. Anybody know more about this?

I do. It has never been a Federal Law requiring manufacturers to have DRL'* in cars. GM did it due to so many vehicles being sold overseas and in Canada where that are required. It is an inexpensive part that would actually cost them more to differentiate between the countries. No Ford, Honda, Chrysler, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Mazda, etc. has them to date. You'll notice that all European cars have them. That is due to an EU law requiring that all vehicles, not just cars, have some sort of higher visibility device working at all times. That means headlights, cornering or added lighting must be on at all times. The only euro car that does not have them is the Focus; that is due to the fact that all the ones sold here are built in Argentina.
Some GM'* use the headlights, others add accessory lights or even H-3'* . These are activated in 1998 and up cars by a small, white relay. In our cars, you will find this under the hood, mounted on the drivers-side fender, behind the PCM box. It is 2 inch by 3.5 inch by .5 inch in size and has 1 connector attached to it. Disconnecting this will turn off the DRL'* and not affect any other part of your lighting.
I disconnected mine for about a year until VA passed that stupid wipers on-lights on law. I reconnected them so I didn't have to remember to turn them on when it rains and it'* too light to activate the sensor. As a matter of fact, I have never used the pull switch in my Bonneville. No need to.....
