I might have screwed up




yeah, that rubber boot thing that'* cracked. I kinda wasn't paying attention to it when I was trying to wrestle the screws out of the thermostat housing, and it was really brittle, and now it'* messed up. What is that and is it a problem?

If its just a vacuum hose that'* coupling a hose to a connector, you can just get a replacement from your local parts store. Almost all of my rubber vacuum couplers were disintegrating, so I replaced them a while back. Makes a difference

Is it dangerous to drive with it cracked like that?

Vacuum leaks will cause you to run lean depending on how bad the vacuum leak is. That one by itself probably isn't a big deal. To be safe just drive the car normally (don't drive with a lead foot) until you get it fixed.

Running very lean while driving a car hard/fast can result in heavy damage to the engine.

Getting a replacement for that vacuum coupler at the local auto parts store won't be easy (maybe NAPA would have it...probably have to go to a dealer; the part number should be embossed on the piece).

As a temporary fix, you could put a small hose clamp on that...but it still could leak and will continue to split.

I permanently fixed mine with a piece of heavy-walled heat-shrink tubing (like for insulating wire), and some careful passes over an oven burner on low.

At the very least, clean it off with some rubbing alcohol and wrap it up real tight with some electrical tape.

Is it this T-shaped connector?


If not, just get a section of the right diameter vac hose and cut to fit. That T by the way is only a few bucks.

Umm, actually, if you look closely, you'll notice that there appear to be TWO lines coming out of the end that passes under that chunk of wireloom. This would be a hard piece to cooble together. Best to take a it to NAPA or your local GM dealer and see if they can find the specific part for you.

Yeah I forgot the TB on the '99 L36'* are different than my '97'*...

For the most part this will make the car run a little rough. As mentioned..it will be a little lean, and compensating for it via the O2 sensor.

Heck.Badnit'* new ssei had a hose completely off and still ran fine.

Get to the dealer or Napa and find a replacement..
