Read the owners manual, I think it says that those tapes will not work in the unit... The tape deck sees this as an error and ejects the tape

use a fm modulator worked for me untill i got the clarion cd player. you can either get one that uses batteries and you plug into it so its wireless or you can get ones you can actually wire into your car and tap into the antenna. i had both. antenna one is better but yah the other ones work well too (just didnt like turning it on and off everytime with the battery powered ones)

I actually went with a 12 pack CD player only reason was that Renée did NOT want to loose her steering wheel controls. At least I can fill it up with 12 cds of MP3'*, lol.
As for the price on the FM modulator, I am not sure cause my 12 pack came with it.

When I first got XM I used a tape adapter. They only last so long before wearing out and doing what you describe. Then I would just go to Walmart and buy a new one for $10.
I went through a couple of adapters a year until I got the XM with built-in FM modulator.
