well, my car wasn't really in the best shape, the plugs were originals, as were most of the rest of the parts. so the fresh parts made a huge difference in my position. the gains you'll see depend largly on how well your car is maintained and running right now.
but getting all your ducks in a line now will benifit you greatly when you start modding more seriously. you can't build a building without a good foundation.

I don't know if you would really call this a mod, but the first thing I did was move the display for my cd changer. It was here when I got the car
and I moved it to here, which was much more practical
I'd have to say my first real "mod" was gutting the airbox

so far .... new fuel filter, stereo, removed stupid stickers ex-wife had on it, gutted airbox, new filter (can't afford K&N right now)
on the platter ... K&N , new sensor (on the PCV valve, forget what it called atm) ect ect ect
