behind that little vent is a tube that connects to the HVAC blower--mounted inside that tube is a thermal sensor (a thermistor?) that tells the HVAC programmer what the air temp inside the car is (at least on the models with Auto Climate Control--not sure about the ones without the auto control)--that'* how you can set a temp on the climate control and leave it in auto--otherwise it wouldn't know when to adjust fan speed/temp control
Chances are there may be nothing there on your car, but it'* easier for GM to just make one part for the car, instead of a different one for the cars that don't get the auto control
