I bet many of those 16 year old n00bs know more about oil and changing it then you do. I know you may not like to think that it is so, but that will come with time....and in your case, maturity.

LOL....I am 17 first of all. And i wouldn ot compare that to 16 yr old drivers, as I am a very good one. I wouldnt get to drive my dads 68k car if i wasnt. Never scratched my car even with my permit. How many people can say the same here???
They can know as much as they want about oil and filters. I know a lot too, and can easily..easily change oil and filter. My grandpop taught me that when i was 14 with his Buick Century.

I think in the later years GM went to a cast alluminum oil pan to help kill off engine noise... I think these engines use 4.5 qts as opposed to the 5 qts in the earlier models... Generally I'd pour in 4 qts( I fill the oil filter 3/4 of the way before I install it ) and then let it run for a minute, shut it off, give it a few for the oil to get back to the pan, recheck and then add to the proper fill level...
I refuse to take the car to a quicky lube place...

Took our nova to an oil shop in mankato. They were very helpful. I knew more then most of their customers about cars, but i need a change on the ol' nova, and I was in my own apt.
They did a decent inspection, and did a good job, and quite fast.

They use these pumps that automatically put in the the amount.
So anyway, I ate the $30 went to the store, bought oil and a filter and was going to do it myself. Went to take off the drain plug and found the plug was almost completly rounded. The socket couldn't grab. I had to get channel locks to unscrew it.!. So now when I do the oil again, I have to get a new drain plug. Unbelievable. I can't believe you have to be a certified mechanic for a simple oil change.

Reason #4874 why I have to open my own shop when I retire from the Navy or @ least find a job where I can afford a lad that I build my own shop I can put a lift into.
I think I'll call it "shadetree shop" it'* slogin will be - "I'm not a prof mech so I won't F'in cross thead your lugnuts or forget to put oil plug in and not tell you"

One of the dealerships around here did an oil change on my friends saturn. Never put the oil plug back in. Some how managed to drive the car for two weeks with no oil. Seems impossible to me....but thats what he said. Didn't die until he did reverse doughnuts in the parking lot at work. Apparently they don't make that engine anymore, so they put some larger V-6 in for him.
