Changing stainless for mild steel seems like a very bad swap. If you want a quieter system, get stock system components from a junkyard. You will get stainless for less than you will pay for aftermarket mild steel. Then, if you want to add a performance muffler, you can cut the pipes properly so the new muffler will fit correctly.

The dealer is the only place to get a stainless system. And you are going to pay an outragoues amount. Depending on where you live, the replacement aluminized system will only last 3-5 years (maybe more in dryer climates) When you cut the factory muffler off, you end up having to extend the pipe a few inches to properly fit the replacement muffler on because you basiclly cut just after the bend. (the factory mufflers are huge) What kind of muffler do you have to be attracting that kind of attention from the police? Are there any leaking in the system? FYI. I put a $16 cherry bomb glasspack in place of a broken resonator on a 96 SSE and it was not louder than stock. It didnt even change the tone with the factory muffler on.
