Mine is L27 powered.... and auto trans... AND not finished yet. The only trans that i know fits on a 3800 for rear engine rear drive gets eaten alive by these engines (it was for a VW) So we are going rear engine reardrive TRANSVERSE mount. 
Basically taking the front end of an older riviera and making it the back end of a bunch of tubes.
I do know someone out there had an L67 Rear engine rear drive dune buggy. I think he was on his 6th transmission.
There was one person i remember talking to that said you cant hardly get into the gas on asphalt even with a L27 with the transmission just because if you stomped on it the trans would just frag.

P.*. There is NOTHING that sounds better than a L27 with custom (home-modified.. you can do that on a test car) headers running with short pipes.... except maybe a L67 doing the same thing
