I've also changed my above-the-lock-and-window-switch lights (door flood lamps) to super bright 2,500 MCD LEDs. I used yellow (I know, boring). They are 5mm, 15-degree view 20ma. part# 55-554SB at www.rpelectronics.com cost me $2.40 (can) for 2.
My experience: the armrest applique is held in place at the back by a bent plastic tab that fits into a slot in the door panel, and at the front by a straight plastic tab with a metal tension retaining clip that'* held onto the plastic tab by tiny barbs, and then snaps into a slot in the door panel. When I pried the front of the applique out, instead of the retaining clip compressing, the plastic tab pulled out of the clip, and the clip fell into the bowels of the door. So off to dealer for replacement retainer, GM part# 25535427 $1.00 (can).
Then to separate the lamp housing from the lens, instead of prying the housing, l pulled on the wires, and they broke off the housing, so off to the wreckers for a replacement lamp housing (free, if you know what I mean).
Finally, the terminal wires on the replacement LEDs I used are not as thick as the wires on the originals, so they didn't engage firmly in the lamp housing, so I folded the terminal wires back to double the thickness, then they engaged firmly.
Bigger job than it should have been, but worth it.

Did ya solder in a resistor? just wondrin i assume you did. But i just cut the wires bout half way and resoldered the LED and resistor The LED foot perfectly and the wire tension holds it in the holder (in the door, i threw away the little black holder)
