I'm just a tad confused. I understand the L67 kicking L36'* A$$ from a stand still but from a roll, why you saying that it a whole another story? Is there something about the L36 I don't know?
The only L67'* you could possibly beat from a roll are the 92'-93'. 75mph+ is the best bet. This is because of the variations of the powerband. At 75mph a L36 will hook 2nd gear. A S1 L67 will only drop into third. Both engines have 205hp but the L67 has a flat torque curve. At highway speeds its horsepower that counts not torque. The L36 will be at its peak horsepower at these speeds. The L67 will not.

Remember, do not race a 94-95 S1 L67. They have an underrated 225hp and will own you no matter what. Obviously the S2 L67 will destroy an L36.

I've driven all the variations of powerplants except the 92-93 L67'*.

Honestly.. none are what I would call gutless or super slow.

At the last NEBF I drove an L27 about 120 miles in pouring rain. It did seem pretty dogish next to other cars I was driving. However...the car was far from peak condition, the fuel pump was dying.

Hopped from that into Singscountry'* car 00+ L36 and felt like I was in a rocket comparatively.

It is however...all relative.

You got that wrong by a bit. Part of it anyway. S1 WILL hit second gear at 70mph. I've done it. And I'm not so sure about an L36 taking a bone stock 92/93 SSEi. I've run across my own share of L36'* back in the stock days with the Zilla, and even the lighter GPGT'* couldn't hang with me from 65 to 110.

I think the L36 is quite formidable, you arent going to find too many "normal" cars of the L36'* era that can run with it, unless theres something special about them.

look at the cars that might be considred in the same general class as the Bonneville, cars like the Taurus, Intrepid, Maxima...cars like that. The newer Maximas would of course roast an L36, but the ones from the same years as a Bonneville might not be as much competition.

But i doubt youre going to find a non-SHO Taurus that can hang with a Bonneville.

The L36 is simply what it is, the middle ground between the L27 and L67. It provides the average user with plenty of driving excitement and more than enough balls to put a smile on your face, and still maintain some excellent highway mileage, for the people who want more, theres the L67....fancy how that works out eh?

S1 WILL hit second gear at 70mph.
I know. I said 75mph. A 93' probably can outrun a L36 anywhere, but for some reason 92'* seem slower than the 93'* despite the same ratings. Most of the 92' trap speeds seem to be around 86-88mph. That is right in S2 territory.

well the 93 had valve train changes and GM didnt re-rate the HP and TQ figures....

Gotcha. I'll agree with you on the 92 perhaps. There were more changes between the 92/93 than commonly talked about. Even drive axles are beefier on the 93'*. Lotsa little things.

I can tell you that the 93 seems to respond to mods better than the 92'*, and we've long suspected that GM failed to bump the ratings to a more reasonable number in 93.

And at the same time, we have some 95'* running equal and in some cases better times than Series 2 L67'*.
