In my case it wasn't burned out, but one of its two connectors was loose, so the ignition would cut in and out over bumpy roads. Took forever to find the problem.
So anyway, I'm cruising along at 60 mph one day and go over some railroad tracks. The ignition cuts out for like, three seconds or so, _while_ the engine is still spinning, pumping the exhaust full of unignited gas mixture, etc. After three seconds the ignition resistor cuts back in, the plugs start firing again, and ***POW***. Everything in the exhaust blows at once. Biggest bang I ever heard, and I'm sitting right over it. Somehow the exhaust system stayed together and the car kept going. Dunno what the guy following me must have thought...

gm really needs to work on intake problems.........whether 3800 series 2 intake plenums, intake gaskets on 350 vortecs, intake gaskets on 3100s, 4.3 vortecs, etc.

I find it odd how that person didn't know what that part was, and thought it was just 'some kind of cover." Seems like it wasn't the cold, but the fuel system/ faulty injector.

GM just sent out recall notices for this problem They say that the fuel pressure regulator can leak, filling the intake with fuel and due to the cold weather, a pop in the intake from not starting right away can cause this I don't have the recall notice handy but I can list the # ASAP.The recall says it will take 30 mins to do the repair.

:? The only thing I was able to find on the notice was a recall # BO3054-*. I don't know if this helps but it is the only # on the sheet. The customer assistance # is 1-866-608-8080 to call for any problems.
