Default Gauge console for a 1988

I just got back from the junk yard with the dash thingy from a 1989 and im not sure how well it will work. my dad thinks im going to f*ck it up to the point where i have to pay a lot o mony to get it fixed.

here are my questions:

1) i was told that i should look for a car that had the same size tires. when i pulled it off i noticed there were no wires but a bunch o computer chips and stuff. shouldnt my computer tell it the correct info so it will read right?

2) before i even try, does anyone know if it is compatable or not? they look the same and i think they ahve all the same lights.

3) does anyone know how to reset the odometer? this one reads 175899, i only have 79XXX on mine.

oh yea...if it even works ill be able to know just how much over 85 i am going.

First off! WTF are you talking about? Are you talking about the CLUSTER? If so I can help lots here! I'll need some info from you first: 1.)Your present cluster'* P/N as stamped on back. 2.) Your car'* Year & model. 3.) This "new" cluster'* P/N off the back of it. 4.) Does all guages this new cluster has in the exact same place as the old cluster in your car? 5.) Tell me what the guages are in this new cluster. 6.) depending on above info I'll then tell you (& I guess everyone else too who reads this) how to change an odometer.

lol...what would i do without u man.

i guess i do mean cluster (im not too bright when it comes to car terms...i jsut started caring about it when i got the car and realized how fun they are)

ill go check the numbers now.

i dont know the presant number at the moment...i dont really want to take it apart right now but i suppose i will.

year 1988 and of coure the make would be bonneville

i c a few number on the back of the new cluster. one says "XK 25088838 made in U.*.A" that is exactly waht the sticker says. there is annother with a company name on it and a bar code with the # MDN0022180 under the code. i just found annother # that is stamped in a few places on the plastic binding the circuits 12066360. i hope these numbers help.

all gauges are in the same place but the speedo on the new one goes to 115 (why i got it and for working tach) and my old one goes to 85.

if i have to ill go take apart my dash right now...doesnt take too long its just ive done it 5 times already today in the junkyard...

No problem...Note: all GM P/N'* are 8 digits long (Yes there is some 6 digit one too) What I plan to do with your info given is run these numbers in my GM computer at work and see if I get a match or compatable replacement. BTW: I meant model as in LE/SE/SSE/SSEI! I'm guessing from your signature it'* a LE though.

PS tire size doesn't matter on our cars since it'* programed into a module on the transmission. OLd RWD cars mattered because of the actual speedo cable'* gears. Our cars are electronic, so if you ever change tire size you will have to get a new module too!

Thnx for checking that for me. and yes it is an LE i should have figured that out (little tired...not really thinking)

i take it u probably need the number on the back of my current cluster. wich brings me to the question...is there any way i can f*ck it up just bay takign it off and putting it back on...my parents seem to think so) if you do jsut post back and ill get it to ya in like an hour. if not jsut say nothing and ill continue watching tv

Do you have a haynes or Chilton manual? If you have one of those by following it you should be able to remove the cluster and put it back together without any adverse consequences.

i have one of those manual next to at the moment actually. taking everyitng apart was the easy part. its wasctually easier than i thougth. jsut take off the dash and undew 6 screws and it slides right off...kinda boring actually. i was expecting a ton of wires but its all computerized.

im sure it will just slide right in but i wanted to know if they were compaatible before i go thoug hthe trouble.

with my luck i would f*ck something up. :(

lol thats what i was trying to tell my parents when they started yelling at me for thinking about it. i told them flat out *holding the unit in hand* "look at it...how can i f*ck it up, it just slides in!"

i jsut noticed something that is going to irritate me a little...the odometer is a little bit to the left about 1mm. so i can c some white on the over miles and the last digint is kinda moved off the visible area. so i can barly c the 1 in 175k. and there is no P RNOD21
kinda odd, i remember it being there at the junkyard. oh well not like i need it to know how many clicks it is till overdrive.

Just do it. (NIKE)

My personal motto: It is far easier to beg forgiveness than to ask permission.

Can't see the "1" in 175000? Dude! We have the same mileage on our cars now!

So what'* stopping you now? I just gave you 3 good reasons to do it, or you can just tell 'em you weren't going to, but beer got the better of your judgement. Happens to me all the time. Why the hell do you think I'm working on water injection?

well if it works ill go for it. i can always go at it with a magic marker or something. no tthat big a deal. it has a cutout for the needle to slide in so im all set.

im just waiting to hear from rat that it isnt compatable and i just waisted my money. (i just dont have a good feeling about it.)

lol if it does i can always go back to the junkyard and tell the guy it doesnt work and he will give e my credit for it and ill take another one wit the leters on it

its all good
