Well, if your "ghetto" intake used a cone filter and a smooth pipe to go to the TB, and you are back to the accordian tube/panel filter; then yes, I think you would notice a difference.
Personally I would rather run a "CAI" setup with no heat sheild than the stock airbox (even if it was gutted)

i still had the accordian, i have my pipe connected to that, either way i tihnk itll be fine, if i notice a decrease ill switch it back
