Final Gear Ratio RPO
What RPO code should I look for to determine the final gear ratio?
This would be for a 94 Olds Delta 88 I'm acquiring with a trans that is pretty much done!

Car is identical to this one:

Are those 15s or 16s? I'm hoping it'* the 2.84 ratio...I like the taller ratios...better highway cruisers, IMO.

Those are 15" I think. My father has that same oldsmobile in Gray. I know that has a taller gear ratio because I have driven it and it is much better as a highway cruiser than my bonneville with the 3.06 gear ratio. I don't even think that any oldsmobile would even come with the 3.06 gear ratio. That is not the oldsmobile way of thinking when that car was released.

different ratios for different wheels?
I've heard this before, but I don't understand exactly why... I know what you're thinking "Different diameters change overall engine to ground ratios!" But, in mesuring or looking at overal outside diameters of the tires is what counts. Aside from my Bonneville project, I have owned (and currently own) two Olds 88'*, and one came with factory steel 15" wheels, and I put Intrigue aluminum 16" wheels with 225 60 16 tires on it, and the outside diameter was identical. Same exact speedo reading, same exact 13.7 miles one way to work. What am I missing here? thanks, Mike

it'* a funny thing... the 16'* and the 15'* have about the same outer diameter (w/in a few percent of each other), but they give the 'sportier' final gear ratio to the upgraded wheels.
why?
good question. might be related to better gas mileage with the 2.84... and people who buy smaller wheels (cheaper), like to get better gas mileage.
or it could be someone'* sick joke to never let a gas mileage thread turn out right in the 92-99 forum...
