The Debate about Overfilling a transmission? Which is true?

rogue, no disrespect. so long as the fluid level is below the rotating components, you'll be okay; but I don't know how far that is, without tearing apart a 4t and measuring. and I know how I'd feel if I said - oh yeah, put in an extra 1/2 quart, you'll be fine!, only to have it put them into the components, and kill their trans...
so i'll say it one more time - if the fluid rises into the rotating components, you're going to screw your trans. if you don't, you'll be fine. I don't think anyone here thinks that GM would put the fill line so close to the 'real' line that it can't take any extra fluid, but how close is a question that I can't answer for you right now...

I'm not sure why, but a lot of my posts are getting deleted. Including a response to this one. If someone is deleting my posts STOP god damn.
This link includes a discussion about it.. and these guys seem to know what they are talking about. Nobody seems to really be giving a good reason here.. unlike this place.

So what have we learned from this thread so far???
Bad to underfill, bad to overfill to the point of the clutches sitting in fliuid.... Hmmm.... Looks like the top of the crosshatch for me...
At tyhis point my Trans is the only one I care about.... and at 140,000 I'm glad its still with me...
Yes Thankyou
mkaake,
Any idea at what level would be too much for the trans...?

Exactly, we may have learned that there seems to be a little extra space over the full hatch mark. But we already knew that.
We may have learned that the marks are there because that'* where the factory wants us to fill it to. But we already knew that.
We may have learned that when our posts disappear it is for a valid reason. Keeping the forum clean and proper. But I already knew that.

about the only way that you'll find out how much is 'too much' is to have someone with a spare tranny pull the pan, and measure the distance from the top hash to the very bottom of the rotating components. that'll tell you how far up the line you can move...
