The Debate about Overfilling a transmission? Which is true?
#31
I have heard many many times that 4t60'* should be overfilled 1" on the dipstick over the full line. I don't know how much this is in fluid, but I would guess 1/2 quart or so. Mine doesn't foam at that level and seems to work fine. When I dropped the pan and changed the filter (the gasket was leaking so I figured I might as well) I just filled it to full and then added a bottle of the Lucas trans fix stuff on top of that. Haven't had any problems.
Also, my dads tranny in his GTP was acting really weird after he got it back from the trans shop. It would slip whenever it was cold when he took off and it would slip at the top of the gears (around 5600 or so all the way to the shift). It was 3/4 of the way up the hashmarks. He put in a half quart and since then it has been performing flawlessly. And with the way he beats on his car, if it hasn't broken his tranny yet, its not gonna.

I had the same problem.. my fluid level was about 1/3-1/2 on the cross-hatched area, and whenever I would go into 3rd gear, it would do nothing but slip.. however 1st and 2nd were flawless. I checked the fluid level continuously, always the same. I checked my transmission fluid flow patters, and noticed 3rd and OD use a LOT more fluid, and fluid pressure than 1st and 2nd. Added 1 quart more, made it 3/4 full on the cross-hatched area.
Rogue makes a good point.. but i'm still kind of skeptical. What kind of transmission mods/beef ups are you running, Rogue? And is 1/2 quart over, 1/2quart quantity wise of what GM recommends, or 1/2 quart OVER the full on the cross-hatched area?

And just outta curiousity, how did you mange to test the fluid flow patterns in your trans?

Well see lakeville, I used my magical x-ray glasses, and looked really hard into the transmission. . Actually.. the FSM lists the fluid flow patterns. It'* actually really good to have around.
Rogue: You must have an incredible transmission.. to have such a fast car, and yet 30k on it. Very cool man..
I think I may try the extra 1/2 quart. My transmission is already kinda screwed.. anyone think i should?

(off topic: Now BillBosts tranny, on the other hand, will be lucky if it makes it 10k )

Actually, Bill, the FSM didn't tell me, but after looking at the pretty pictures, it kinda showed. Here is what I looked at.. it has more details [that the pics don't show, or are on the next page], and more pictures, but these are all I was concerned with. They are in order, Park [engine running], 1st, 2nd, 3rd, drive range w/ TCC, 4th [OD]
