Mine was rebuilt under warranty with under 45k on it. Dad doesn't quite remember what happened to it, it was about 10 years ago. The new one'* running fine, I had the fluid and filter changed about 2 months ago, no metal chunks in the pan. My mother drove the car for about 10 years before I got it, so it'* had a fairly easy life. It'* only been driven in mountains the past year or two, and I'm not the type to do burnouts (small women don't do burnouts, we hang shiny things from the mirror, and give our car a name )

I have to say that replacing the vacuum line to it made a HUGE difference in how she shifts, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone with my tranny who'* unhappy with the shift points.

My SSE started failing to go into gear about four, maybe five years ago. Usually it was from a standing start, such as at a traffic light. Then I lost the top gear, then the next, yada, yada, yada.... I voted in the 75K miles category, but it may have been before that.

When it started acting up, I had a guy do the "$79.99 Trans Fluid filtration" treatment- I forget what it'* called, really, but it was heavily promoted. I think every shop I was in back then was pushing it.

You've seen the promo board. "This is what your tranny fluid looks like, this is what it can look like after you pay us $80." I don't think he changed the filter and it went all crappy not long after that. He also charged me $200. + to replace a fuel pump. I think it was just over $400. total.

When I sold tools for Sears, I made friends with a mechanic/body man. When my car needed work, I went to him. He helped me make my living so I wanted to help him make some of his. He was kinda hard to find. I looked and looked for his shop, then found one of his cards and called and got directions.

When the tranny finally died, Tim said there was a superslick compound which might help but it was $35 a bottle and he couldn't guarantee it would work. It didn't, and he didn't, but he'd been upfront about it. I couldn't be upset with that.

I got a great deal on a 48" lower professional box at Sears. I think it was a year or two out of date. Originally it was about an $800. box. I swapped that and $350 cash to Tim for a rebuilt tranny. Took over a week to get it back, but I haven't had any real problems since.

It'* getting a little clunky at about 35MPH; I think that may be a torque converter issue. I guess it'* time to drop the pan and change the filter. If I choose to do it myself, what suggestions do you have for me?

I'll stop in and check on it later on.

Dan, if you're having mechanical issues, post your issues in the 92-99 section and we'll do what we can for you. This topic is strictly for collecting failure data.
