Looks like Dad is a Mechanic with a very nice shop. :P

I can see someone tried to jack up your car using the oil pan.....or you like to jump tracks like someone else I know.

who knows who is actaully looking at this post anymore...hopefully all the right people...

tonight, me jason (bonnememn) and nate (lakevillessei) took a ride in my car with its redone tranny...

they noticed it was smooth, until WOT...

we found a way to better describe the problem. when you punch it, right before it shifts into 2nd, the engine throttle goes down making way for the shift, but the shift is delayed, and then the engine throttle goes back up, thinking it downshifted, and once the throttle is back up, it shifts, HARD, cuz the engine is running WOT...

any ideas? electrical?

Like I said before, it does feel like a normal shift, but the tranny is about 1.5 secs or so behind the engine. Nate and I figured it wasn't the Torque converter, because then anytime you were at idle and hit it, it would be nuts.

One thing is, is it doesn't do it in the 2-3 shift under WOT. I don't know if that'* because acceleration is less up there or not, but it was totally non-existant at the other shift point. We shoulda tested the 3-4 shift... Can 2nd gear bits and bolts (bands, gears, etc) be torn up enough to cause this delay, yet be fine under normal conditions?

Sticky shift solonoid. That'* the most likely. 75% odds. Try running a tranny flush product through it for about 500 miles, then do a full trans flush/filter/pan, etc. Your shift solonoid may be getting lacquered up. Hope it'* that, if the solonoid itself is weak, it may have to be replaced.

Edit:

Let me clarify a bit. There are two types of shift delays possible. Electrical (weak solonoid) and mechanical. Mechanical can be the sticky solonoid, but other things as well including a worn 2nd gear. Mine did that for awhile before it went boom. That'* all the crud that was in my pan.

No automatic should be "shifted manually". You can't shift better then the PCM calls for.
yes, you can.

Then, transmission damage may occur. As long as you aren't doing this, then all is well. Just be careful with those free revs.. like dropping 3rd to 1st going 40mph. That'll bite cha. I downshifted my auto, but not beyond when slowing down for a stop sign/light, and going 15-25mph, and dropping it in first. Made the car slow down a helluva lot faster, and since my brakes suck, that'* always a good thing
no. the reason your tranny doesn't allow the downshift is because it knows how fast the internal components are allowed to move. heck, you can throw it into park at 90 mph. i don't recommend it, and it'* rather stupid (and you'll hear what the parking pawl sounds like when it can't grab), but it prolly won't even hurt your transmission. (disclaimer - this is rather stupid, i wouldn't try it to prove a point)

Most shifting bores only last for about 100 some k anyways
if that was true, we'd all be in really bad shape, as ALL of the shifting in the transmission is due to valves moving in bores. and if there was damage, it would be making the bore oversized, not elongate it. if it was elongated, your valves wouldn't line up in their bores, and you wouldn't be shifting at all. not to mention for a valve to elongate a bore in an aluminum valve body, it wouldn't be a valve - it would be a freakin drill bit. and you won't be finding any o-rings on your valves... there is no physical seal between the valve and the valve body. It'* actually sealed based on the incredibly tight tolerances (we're talking measureing tens of microns on the surface of the valve). only o-rings i can think of off the top of my head that are located in the VB are on the end of your solenoids.

</rant>

anyhew, i'll pull open the book tomorrow to see what i can see, but my instinct is with willwren on this one. it sounds like a sticking solenoid, but again, i'll dig in to the manual tomorrow and see what i can see.

<edit> just to make sure it'* clear here... you will NOT do any damage to your transmission by downshifting. really. seriously. honestly. all you're doing is moving a small valve (the manual shaft valve) to a different position. the transmission fluid moves a little further down the bore. and creates pressure on the pressure plate. which tells the pcm where your shifter is pointing. that in turn will cause a clutch (usually) to engage that wasn't engaged before. and you're not going to cause extra wear and tear, so please stop telling people that it will.

<edit x2>

re-reading this, sorry if any of it came off rude, it'* just frustrating sometimes to hear a lot of mis-information that makes people fear their transmission.

have i mentioned that downshifting manually will not hurt the transmission?

p.*. nice lift! i need to get one of those. or maybe a garage first... or maybe a house before that...

I should clarify something I said, downshifting a transmission itself doesn't hurt it, but the effects of running higher in the gear, etc might. Your heating it up more, and putting a higher load on it when going to a significantly lower gear for downhills. Some places you have to, but on every hill in town (mankato area is hilly) you'll be running hotter overall IMO.

Andrew, what'* the deal behind they silly shiney and clean subframe? Did he clean it up and paint it? Looks neat.

fair enough

and it'* great in the snow for slowing down...

and yeah, that subframe looks sweet...
