I rebuilt my old 105Amp alternators alot of times, due to the fact parts at $80 were bettter than a $150 new one!
I usually replaced the Diode pack, brushes, voltage regulator, etc as needed too.

Where did you find the parts to rebuild it? I have been told that no parts are available for it. I would love to rebuild mine. I've found alot of rebuilt ones are poor quality. I have seen some look like they didn't even bother to replace the brushes.

I bought a rebuilt alt in the beginning of the year--no noise yet but when I 1st start the car(very early in the morning)and I have the lights on w/the defog and whatever else and then step on the brake, my alt gauge goes almost to the left! Once or twice the batt light comes on and the car almost stalls out. I have to shut everything off. After a few minutes everything is ok and I can turn it back on.
Did our cars have high amp alts? Is that something I can do myself--to make it a high amp?

Thanks for the info on the alternator parts. My cousin works for a parts store, maybe I could get him to look into that for me. I know GM doesn't have the parts. I will probably try Percision. Thanks again.

Hi,
When I start my 88 Bonneville LE the voltmeter reads about 16 volts and then it drops to 14 volts as engine gets warmer. As far as I know it should read 12 volts, but it never drops to that point. Is that something normal or there might be a problem in the alternator?
The car has 201K miles on it, the battery was changed about 5 months ago, and a new alternator was put about 6 years ago.

Am on the 5th or 6th alternator on my '90. Maybe that'* why they are so easy to R&R - hardest part is replacing the belt (have an 18 mm gearwrench with no offset or angle & extend to about 20". Of course it could be I need more exercise 8*).
Just had the latest one start whining when hot - enough to feel in floorboards. Was still under warrently from last time - $60 at Autozone - so they just handed me another.
