Dark information center

Dark information center
My 1994 SSEi cars information center will not light up so I can see my trip or regular odometer or any other features, sometimes it will light up very dimley and I can see the numbers for a very few seconds, but then goes completly dark again.
Also what scan tool do I need to read the fault codes.
