slow fill at gas pump
Just the last month my '02 Monte SS is very slow to fill at the pump - and I've tried several different stations. It has to be a slow trickle or it will click off. It takes over 10 minutes to get 3/4 tank... I've been getting PO446 Evap Emissions code but a new gas cap did not cure it. Is this related to the slow fill up? How do I test/troubleshoot this? Any ideas?
Thanks.
Thanks.

There shouldn't be anything in that fill tube or vent. Maybe consider pulling the rubber hose from the filler on the side of the car to the tank and checking for any bends, kinks or restrictions.

somewhere it has to connect to the tank. My thoughts are pull it and look/test for restriction.
Unless they are putting something in the inlet to the tank to keep people from siphoning...if so I'd think something was out of whack with that.

On the same note..I've had occasion where a pump will kick off due to filling too quickly depending on the angle of the pump, as well as which way the nozzle is facing. If the air can't escape..it'll kick off.

Thanks for the post guys. I do know some cars are slow fillers, but this one has been fine (fastest setting with no trouble ever) until about a month ago - so I'm sure something is wrong. Started getting the engine light with PO446 code at about the same time too, so I'm sure there'* a problem. I guess the next step is to pull the fill tube and inspect. Thanks...

OK, I checked my 97 FSM and although this is an '02 Monte, the information could be useful.
P0446 - EVAP Canister Vent Blocked, is set by:
1. EVAP vent solenoid stuck closed
or
2. A restricted vent hose
or
3. A blocked EVAP canister
Diagnostic Aids are:
1. Verify that the vent hose between the canister and the EVAP canister vent valve is not kinked, pinched, plugged, or otherwise restricted. Find your evap canister and check all hard and soft lines. You could also check the vent lines to and from the tank to the cansiter and back. Look for kinked or bent lines. I would look at the canister itself as well to see if it is clogged, full of fuel, etc.
2. Inspect harness connectors at PCM for backed out terminals, broken locks, improper mating, damaged terminals, poor terminal to wire connection.
3. Inspect the wiring harness to the EVAP canister vent valve and the fuel tank pressure sensor. Check connectors at the canister and any by the fuel tank.
A blockage in the EVAP canister vent path can be caused by a malfunctioning EVAP canister vent valve (stuck closed), plugged, kinked, or pinched EVAP canister vent hose, shorted EVAP canister vent valve control circuit, or plugged evaporitive cansiter.
The only other component that is supposed to set P0446 is the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor.
Is P1675 also set? This would signal that there is a problem with the EVAP vent solenoid control circuit.
Was any work performed on the car just before this occured? If so, maybe a connector was not reconnected properly. Check your vent canister connections and hoses and look for kinked or pinched hoses. Hope this helps get you started!

Thanks, that helps a lot. There were no other codes set, and no work has been done for several months - other than oil change... It'* supposed to be warmer this weekend (only 13deg now), I'll look it over then. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.
