98 Camaro 3.8 3800 Series II Fuel Pump P0174 Saga
Hey guys, tired of all the work I've been lately...everything from lowly climate control **** refabrications to both power window motors. Long story short, my fuel pump went year ago...my cheap hack mechanic did the "trap door" in back of hatch to access pump easily from top.
The pump he put wasn't best and was for short term. I decided to man up and try it this time with new one, I ordered one from Spectra, it came with pump surrounded by white plastic casing and had 3 tubes, I only installed the one tube as previous pump had to the main feed, also put in new strainer. So upon putting this back I am still having the problems
Intermittent surging at lights/idling, and occasional hesitation/ quick stop upon acceleration or throttle. Also everytime I clear a code, P0174 (too lean/bank 2) comes back.
I also cleaned my MAF sensor after learning how, checked vacuum leaks, changed PCV valve, and bought fuel filter (which will change next week). Any reason why this would still be sputtering and occasionally shutting down at idle? After another new fuel pump? Sorry for long post guys, but I am self taught and have no one to ask, kind of gave up on my old mechanic (plus his prices!) Thank you !

Also heres the exact pump I used.
1998 Chevrolet Camaro Fuel Pump - Spectra Premium SP49917M - - PartsGeek.com
See the extra 2 rubber hoses that come off the back "reservoir" like area of white plastic casing, those I just left attached in case they were needed in future. I put everything back to just test drive car and see if it actually started, which it did, running ok, until same problems surfaced as before with old pump (which was JUST the motor part with one flex tube and the 2 electrical wires)

Thick tube is your primary feeder. Medium tube is your fuel return line. Small tube is your vent tube. If these aren't all connected, you got issues.

Thanks ton for reply Mike, so this makes sense. I was kinda stuck following what mechanic before me did, but like I said I don't think he knew what he was doing fully. I can see where the return would attach to, on the top of my hanger assembly theres an input where I could put that one rubber tube. So then 2 would be connected, just one to go... the longest rubber tube that comes out my pump sender, the vent one I believe as you said, I don't see where this could possibly go?

I'm just going to pull it out again tomm when I have daylight and take picture to show you guys, I have the main hooked up right, I know where to put the fuel return line now (which wasn't hooked up at all before from mech), I just need you guys help as where to guide the long vent tube I guess. Hopefully this will be end of my non stop repairs for while.

I couldn't wait till tomm, I depressurized and pulled back out, connected the fuel return line as you can see, but there is no "nipple" or anywhere to put that longest vent tube? I tried my best taking decent pics

On the bottom side, don't worry about the vent tube. As long as it'* connected to something on the upper end of the rigid pipe you are fine.

Well, after connecting that second fuel return line, and tucking the long vent tube away (but keeping above the fuel line in tank I believe), I dropped the assembly back, fired her up, cleared the codes....and FINALLY, shes back to running great. 8k miles to go to 200,000. I replaced PCV valve, cleaned MAF sensor w spray, and checked EGR vacuum lines too. So it looks like my long journey to get the Camaro back to running shape has worked. Thanks again Mike!

Actually it didnt work, ended up running rough again. And now it completely wouldnt start, turned over fine. Threw P0102 and p0155 code again before died...so after towing back to my driveway, I bought and installed a new MAF sensor (which needed, my filament eroded completely)...still didnt start. Pulled fuel pump out again and checked both tubes and tightened feed clamp with bracket...checked annoying tiny Black and gray connects for the electrical part of fuel pump itself, dropped back down, repressurized, and now it starts up barely cycles rough and dies, only stays alive if I give it gas above 1200 or so RPM, otherwise if left to idle it dies now. I am clueless, checked vacuum leaks and replaced PCV valve also, air filter replaced along w oil and other normal maintenance 4 weeks ago. Im running out of ideas. Oh and I checked the ENG SENS fuse, no problem it is fine. I think its time to finally give up, I seem to be fixing it more than driving lately.

Go back out, turn key on, gently hold the throttle open a crack. Start engine. If it wants to start and it seems like you have to feather the throttle to keep it alive, then good chance your IAC is stuck closed.
