thats true if you just go drive without ever plugging it in but thats not really what it was meant for, if you were going to do that you could just get a cruze for about half the money

You can buy a lot of cars at half the money. I look at it as return on investment. Even if I drove it to work and back only and never use any gas. Figure in the higher electric bill and remove that from what I spend on gas each year, that'* saving me about $2000 a year. Now keep in mind a lot of that driving is well outside the battery range. So let'* just say $1500 a year saved. How much is that car? $40k was it? That'* over 23 years. I don't expect to have a car that long.

Yeah, I agree...I don't want one single car for 23 years, unless it'* a classic Camaro, or something...and, now, GM is buying back Volts from owners who have concerns about fires as a result of an accident, which I think is a good idea. I wouldn't buy a Volt unless it had some sort of safety mechanism in place to protect the battery in the unfortunate event of an accident....IMO.

I think people are over-reacting about the whole fire situation. That Volt caught on fire over a week after the was written off. How many people are gonna have their car in their driveway a week after they write it off? I doubt the insurance and everything would even be straightened out in a week. Basically the only place that car would be a week after a bad crash is at a tow yard.

The fires in question are a result of crash testing done by NHTSA, and, the fires happened 3 weeks after the testing was performed, as far as I understand...

I never heard about the ones that were crash tested. There was one that was in a real world accident that caught fire about a week after it was towed.

Like any new technology, it will develop over time. You can't expect the first electric cars to be the ultimate solution. I give GM credit for putting the Volt out there, even though they take a loss on it.

Push sales, and find new engineering ideas for the car. Reducing weight, making the batteries more advanced and efficient for further ranges in the future. Newer tire designs, low drag, more standardized production costs, and you could have one good car. I'd buy one I had the 40,000, lol.
Was looking into a Cruze, and the new Malibu comming, and GM is starting to throw sucker punches out there with nice products.
