Took the car to dealer for diagnosis. I told them that starter is working and crank shaft will not turn full rotation. Their diagnosis report says that starter is working and engine does not turn fully... I was told I need a new engine that is not currently available and I got a bill for $190. My car was under warranty when the problem occured but was out of warranty by a couple of weeks . The problem happened around Christmas time and my warranty expired in Jan. They won't accept my oil change logs with oil purchase receipts as I bought several cans at once(because there was a rebate)..They require invoices from a shop with date, milage, vin etc to even consider doing anything for good will. The dealer said there is no good will after warranty expires.
I am wondering if I will end up spending 1000 just for diagnosis. If I take to another shop, I have to pay for towing too. I think the "valve train" does not turn when the engine is turned partial rotation..Does give any more light to the problem? I am assuming that the timing chain is the problem.. but it is difficult for mechanic to diagnose if cylinder heads or valve stem is damaged or can this be done within an hour or so labor?

If the engine stops when rotated manually..Can the leak down test still be done? I have read that the test is done when cylinder is at top position. It sounds like the valve may be open and cylinder head doesn't hit top dead centre..so how can leak down test be done? Am I not understanding the test properly?
