I put one on my 75 conv. but that is easier I'm sure because - I did it at the thermostate housing right next to the light sender. I drained the coolant down and dried the thermostate jacket. Then drilled and tapped for the sensor and vacummed the slivers up with the shop vac. Theres got to be a place on the V6 somewhere that wouldnt be to hard to do a good job but Ive never looked into it. Maybe even a predrill and tapped with a plug.
I always thought the beepers that are on the heavy trucks are the greatest. If you have the right system it will shut the engine off within 5 seconds of loosing oil pressure or too high of water temp which is before true overheat. You have real gauges + bright red lights + beeper w/auto shut down. Nearly bullit proof. Try day dreaming through all that.
BTW I did it to the 75 conv. because even with the huge Kenworth grills it got too warm climbing country mountain roads on hot days because someone replaced the 5core with a 3 core. and the slow engine rpms with the mechanical fan didnt cut it.
Also we wore out two of those old Rabbits ourselfs - A 80 pickup and an 81 Diesel car. Ive seen that light, one of them had the radiator sender that controlled the fan go bad. Then we got the 86 LeSabre and got spoiled from there. So nice to have some room and power.

LoL. Just because I envy a real grill doesn't imply that my car is overheating anymore than a statement of liking red cars implies i hate blue cars. To read more into what I said than what I actually said..is a little foolish.
BTW, your stock t-stat doesnt guarantee that your car is actually at 195F in heavy traffic. I think you find that your fans dont even activate until over 220F or so...and thus...you will not be running at t-stat temps in traffic.
FYI, those of us that have series II 3800'*, recognze that heat is the enemy when it comes to intake leaks. It was far easier to keep my royale cool than this LSS at a stopped position. The reduced frontal grill area does compromise air flow to the radiator.
All the air dams and scoops in the world wont help you if your not moving.
I prefer gauges, mostly because of my years as a over the road driver...but for people not accumstomed to checking the cluster regularly, than an idiot light is fine.

There are numerous class action lawsuits over this intake leak issue ....and its not going away. There are a combination of factors at work here..but high engine temps and the oem coolant are chief suspects.
You keep pointing out that the '96-'99'* have ports in what you call an "airdam". ( BTW, airdam and bumper covers, arent the same thing. The airdam is a relatively thin blade of plastic under the nose of many cars..that acts as a shovel to direct some ram air under the moving car up into the radiator. A bumpercover is just as its name implies, and is what you are referring to here, I hope.)
However, both the '95 and '97 have ports in that area for the radiator. These ports are about equal in size, so neither design has an advantage one over the other as far as airflow is concerned.
However, and I dare you to argue this...the '96-'99'* have much reduced grill area from which the fans can efficiently pull air . Since both had these same sized ports in the lower bumper..but the '97 has a smaller grill...isnt it reasonable to assume that the '97 has lost some airflow over the '95 with its larger grill? With that being said...when is it ever better to reduce airflow to the radiator..especially when these cars are running hotter and hotter?
This design change..was an excellent example of form over function. But why go to the trouble of cutting and hacking..when one can just put a header panel from the '95 on? I may likely do that..after all the other ideas and mods have occured.
I trade every 2-3 years anyways...and always after the cars have 200-250k on them. The Royale was driven nearly 150k in 3 years..and was traded in April with 245k on the clock.
