^ OH, yes I do remember seeing cars shipped that way, but what does side terminals have to do with that?
I can only assume that the side terminals came about with the redesign of the AC-Delco batteries to the "sealed" design. They had to eliminate the battery cell filler caps to prevent acid from spilling out during "tilted" rail car shipping.
