This is mainly how to change the LIM gaskets, but will give you just about all the information you will need. https://www.gmforum.com/mechanical-134/changing-lim-gasket-278911/

Thanks so much!! So great to have all this help----
Is there a step by step illustrated procedure for replacing the UIM and the LIM gaskets? also, where are the coolant elbows and what size are they? i probably will find them when disassembling, but want to know what to look for---
thanks again---

They are the same between all L67, L32, L36 and L26 motors. That covers all Series 2 and Series 3'*.
Dorman part number 47065
Napa part number 660-1736
I've had trouble buying them locally before. Simply had the parts store order the Dorman ones. Then recently I walked into Napa and was browsing to see them on the parts thingee with other various "oh crap" things.

Here is the update----I replaced the LIM gaskets with Felpro, and the UIM with a Dorman. I put it all back together and was able to get the motor running. (after a while---seemed to take a bit to pick up fuel). after running for 10-15 minutes, the "rapping" in the top of the motor stopped and she purred like a kitten. Now here'* the part I don't understand----
I took the car for a ride after completetion of the job, after the white smoke/steam had stopped, and after the motor quieted down. At idle the motor sounds great, but when accellerating, or even trying to hold 65 mph, the car hesitates, then pulls, then hesitates, then pulls....etc.....The 20 minute drive I took it on didn't clear out that problem. The idle woudn't drop below 1000rpm, even when the motor should have been good and hot.
also, the new 195 degree thermostat does open, by looking in the radiator and seeing hot coolant flowing, but the system won't build pressure, and won't heat up beyond 160 degrees according to the gauge.
In addition, the exhaust sounds funny, like wheezing. Probably coolant still in the cat and muffler.
One more thing, the "check engine" light started flashing, then holding steady, then flashing. I thing that means the cat in in trouble, or O2 sensors out of whack---
any suggestions? I think the initial problem is fixed, but I seem to have created others---what is the best way to troubleshoot and complete this job?
any help would be great!!! thanks again!!

Thanks Dan---questions for you----Which O2 sensor should be cleaned? the one in front of the Cat? also, I'm not sure what you mean by the #4 or #6 spark plug wires touching the o2 sensor wire. How would that cause the symptoms I am seeing?
thanks so much---I will check all these things when I get out of work today---
