the temp sending unit in these cars do 2 things tell the ECM to idle up engine
when stone cold most time to 1000 to 1200 for 30 sec to 1 min
then drops down to mmm about 800
when they go bad they can still work as far as the temp gauge goes
but can cause the ECM to idle the motor at 1500 to 2500 until
the motor gets to were the radiator fans go on
some times just shut off the car and restarts fix'* it until
next cold dead start because the ECM is cleared until next
dead cold start
this happen to our REGAL
and 5 others we worked on
always replacing the temp sender for the gauge fixed this problem on
all 5 of the cars
all the cars only had one temp sending unit
but some cars actual have 2 one for gauge one for ECM
the idle relearn process never fixed any of these
all the others went to some other shops
they did the clean the TB replace idle control motor
still same problem until temp sending unit replaced
yea who would think its bad when the gauge works right??
sorry for the book I wrote here
just hope helps some one
thanks to all of you

Well sir, based on your reasoning, you have showed everyone here that you did NOT read all of the replies in this thread.
The OP clearly said, he cleaned the sticking butterfly plate/TB and the idle is much better, but the IAC isn't within specs and that he is going to change it.
You sir, should stop being a parts cannon.

hum now what exact did his first thing say idle speeding up to 2000 rpm
exact like what I said can cause it
the fact he cleaned the TB and it runs some what better is he talking hot or cold
if it runs normal when warm up its not going to be the idle control valve now is it??
he as failed to say if he replaced the ICV at this time has he????
why don't we see what the other members think like teck 2
when 6 cars including my own had this problem
and a 10 dollar part fixed it
and I personal was the person that fixed all 6 of them that'* good odds to me

so lets look at his first post
03 Lesabre 3.8L I can't get the idle speed to stabilize. Changed the plugs and wires checked EGR, PVC, and just about everything I could reach, there is a slight vacuum pull from the oil filler hole while running also. What'* happening is the idle speed from start-up is at 900 rpm and gradually increases to over 2000 rpm while the engine is warming up, the idle set screw isn't even touching the throttle..... any help would be appreciated as it'* our only car thanks
his post clearly says {WHILE ENGINE IS WARMING UP}
THIS would have you believe there is not a problem when warmed up
but he failed to mention this part now did he
what exact part tells the ECM the engine is cold??
the temp sending unit
what tells the ECM to turn on radiator fans
the temp sending unit
what makes the temp gauge work
the temp sending unit
i am only here to try to help some one avoid paying repair place
when he don't have to
we all do at some point and i don't say i know everything

ok that'* good your first post sounded just like a problem we were having
but the temp sending unit was sending wrong settings to the ECM to make it
idle like at 900 then 1500 then 2000 until it warmed up
so all is well now at dead cold start up?
