I'm sure the book allows for engine removal/re-install. And nickel and dime items like coolant drain/flush/refill. 40 hours though? @ ?? $75/Hr. I think they added quite a few (We are a Chevy Dealer telling you we don't want to work on a Caddy engine) hours to your "Quote" . At those hours/price a couple stripped head bolts would take you over the cost of a new crate engine.

That also turned out to be a mistake. I was pissed that my warranty wasn't covering the oil cooler lines, and for some reason they decided to scratch up two of my wheels. Looks exactly like the guy just dropped the rotor on the wheel. I went back and they refused to take responsibility, saying it was curb rash or it was my fault, even though I had pictures of the car from before.
Just another reason why I don't trust anyone else to work on my car. That list of repairs did run $2100 though.

Update on 2004 GXP
Things got slow here so one of the shop guys decided to tear into the Bonneville. Two problems were found - we knew about the slow coolant leak that caused rough initial running and threw a code. That turned out not to be a bad head gasket but what looked like a thin spot in the head where the coolant would "weep" through the head. I guess you could call it a minute crack. But that'* on one head. This didn't cause the major problem.
The problem that caused the motor to lock was a dropped valve on the other head. The valve dropped and banged on the piston and the piston shoved the valve into the head. Reman heads were going to be $1500 each, plus the piston and block machining.
Someone found a salvage N* at a local salvage yard for $1600 so they bought that and going to install it. Car has 140,000 miles on it and this engine had 38K on it when the car it was in was totalled.
And to the fella who said "Northstar" and "Fleet car" - yes. This car did belong to one of our salesmen, who took meticulous care of the car. He left the company and the higher ups started passing it around like a cheap date.
