I would have to say were both right in this case...... Read below.
The last part of this paragraph refers to the larger subs 15" and up but would not reflect if using multiple smaller subs like the 2 tens because the overall surface area is not combined in one speaker.

Good topic to read.
Acoustic output is directly related to the volume of air displaced by the cone. This displacement is similar to the bore and stroke of a piston in an engine. In the case of a woofer, the bore is the area of the speaker cone and the stroke is the excursion. It is obvious that increasing the diameter of the driver or its excursion will increase its maximum output.
Typically, speakers less than 8 inches in diameter are incapable of producing sufficient acoustical power at low frequencies without tremendous excursion. On the other hand, speakers larger than 15 inches in diameter suffer from poor transient response due to the large mass of the cone.
The mass of the cone will drastically affect efficiency. Tripling the cone mass reduces the acoustic output by one half.

Well, instead of forking out an extra ~300 bucks for new stuff, I came up with a brilliant plan.............THEFT!!!! And by that I mean I took the sub an amp out of my dads camaro, lol. The understanding when I sold him the car was that I got to keep the stuff anyhow, so I figured now was a good a time as any, so I just asked him if I could take it out to put in the bonnie, he was cool with it. So, here it is, (10" apline type R powered by a small apline amp) I'd like to set it up similar to this due to the fact that the enclosure is obviously custom built for a camaro, any thoughts?

which equates to 36.4mm of travel over all = 1.43 inches. although I doubt you would ever see that much travel.

BLACK94SSEi: those stats are for the 10" type R which is pictured. I am well aware that other subs are different.
