I now have the paperwork from his repairs. I'll send all the details in a PM, but the summary is as follows. First trip - "installed scan tool. U1300 serial data failure - diagnosed per si2000. Found ignition switch mode failure. Disassembled dash and replaced ignition switch assembly. Reassembled dash. P1626 theft signal lost. Diagnosed theft system, found intermitant exciter module failure. Gained access and replace exciter module assembly."
Subequent trips. "Multiple serial data codes set. u1255, u1300, u1016, u1040, u1064, u1065, u1088, u1066, and p1626. One of multiple midules on serial data line pulling line down. Condition is not current, can not duplicate for tech. Watched message monitor to see if module was inactive or missing, unable to detect. Possible cluster is causing serial date prblem due to cluster being inop intermittantly. Disassembled dash and removed cluster to get id number off cluster. Ordered exhange cluster. installe dexhange cluster and reassmebled dash. cleared all codes in all modules. Attempted sever starts - starts for tech every time. Recommend good qc roadtest and cold start in am. Started again, all seems ok at this time.
Writer called specmo and had original cluster sent back after repair. Disassembled dash, removed and replaced, reoadtested. Part of IP stops working. Service writer obtained 'new' cluster from specmo. Disassembled dash, removed and replaced IP cluster. Roadtested - radio went inop and part of cluster stopped working. ipc code u1300... (Looks like a page is missing here. He said that they had replaced the PCM so maybe it was done here. Also, I believe they put in yet another IP cluster.)
That'* what I have at this point. They never did fix it before he got out of his lease.

When it dies does it seem to usually be when you are under throttle or braking or does it do it while cruising?
Completely unrelated to the question above. We are having a very similar problem with a '95 GP with an L67 swap that will start and run perfectly normal and then quit. Then intermittently it will start up and run fine again. Sometimes for an hour, sometimes for two weeks. In that car we know it is a wiring issue, if we move a certain wire under the hood it starts right up everytime. You can actually move the wire and while cranking if you move it back it will quit cranking. I haven't traced to see where this wire goes but if I were you I would just start tracing wires and trying to find a short. At first glance the wire appears to go from the starter to the ABS module which makes no sense at all but maybe somehow the PCM needs a signal from that to keep the engine running and if it gets it power from the pos. terminal on the starter I guess that could make sense. I'd make sure all the connections at the starter and battery are clean and tight, also make sure that the battery cables running from the batter to under the hood are in good shape with no corrosion. This swapped car has the battery located in the trunk and maybe that has something to do with it as well.

When I pulled the crank position sensor I found some metal shavings stuck to the magnet of the sensor. Hmmm I thought.. things weren't adding up and maybe that little bit of stuff could be causing my issue.
I hope you find your problem Paul.

Ok, I'll put my 2 cents in here and then take my S1 arse outta here.
Paul, sounds like the crank sensor, just because I had the same thing happen. It would suddenly turn off without notice. Then sometimes if the car was hot, the car would not crank over when I'd try to start it back up. Just sounds exactly what the bullet is suffering from.
and I'm out...

I don't think it'* the crank position sensor. I've had one of those go in my Jeep before. Different symptoms. The starter does not even try to turn over.....no power at all, except accessories and lights.

I'm baffled with this......NONE of it makes sense.
But, if you get rid of the car though.....I'll be first in line to attempt to buy it

Like a pack of vultures fighting over position in front of a dying calf.
It'* been quiet since Thursday'* fiasco. shhhhhh.
If I'm lucky it'* only a Thursday problem.
Do you think it has anything to do with the small pulley :?: That'* when the problem started.......but how in heck could that have anything to do with the starter :?
