Two more questions... I Was thinking about when the SES light came on the last two times...
1.
First Time my gas light had just come on. I shut off the car, went inside, came back out and turned the car on, SES came on with it. (this means the Evap. system was checked upon starting the vehicle. Makes sense to me. (gas light had come on 2 miles earlier, so pretty low fuel)

Second Time my light came on I was on my daily commute... 25 miles later I get off the highweay coming down a hill to a light with a half tank of gas...when i came to a stop, the SES came on.

When does the evap system check for leaks? I know it does on start up but what would have made it come on 30 mins after I started the car?

2. Second Question... Is the gas cap code P0440 or P0442, because I thought everyone said it was P0440, but wouldn't the P0442 for small leak detected make more sense for the gas cap?

Code was P0440. Again. I got some sand paper, and I am going to clean up the gas filler neck a little where the seal is on the gas cap. It'* pretty rusty and I am hoping that that is the problem. If it comes on again, then I will be going under the car to find the purge valve.

That will be a great start. If it continues after that, we'll probably suggest crawling under the car for visual inspection of the evap system.

I smoothed out the surface on the gas filler cap with sand paper, so we will see how it goes...hopefully it'* good now. I'll report back in about a week if all goes well.

My SES came back on, Friday. I am assuming it'* the same thing again... I will check the code tomorrow night... I'll report back...

Looking ahead... if it'* the same code, i suppse i should crawl myself under the car and look at the valve in the back of the car.

Yes, P0440 again... detailed description...

CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC
The EVAP system is not able to achieve or maintain vacuum during the diagnostic test.

I'm Lost...been fighting this one for a while.

Did you ever work on the vent valve?

I can still smell gas after I fill up pretty strongly only from outside the car. It does not drip outside the car, only fumes. Could this be only the gas cap or could it be the vent?

I guess I would want some other options, such as trying a new gas cap, before crawling under my car in the snow... or I will just wait until it warms up for one more day before winter really hits.
