Try 'Rust Fix' from Duplicolor,........spray cans(I think you can buy it in cans as a brush-on,as well),goes on as a clear spray,as soon as it contacts any rust it stops the rusting and turns to a black waterproof coating,.....you can then spray over it with something like 3M'* professional grade Rubberized Undercoating or any color paint you might choose,........[I know what you mean by rusting brake lines and/or tranny lines.......a few years/Winters of undergoing salt-spray from the road-salt,and certain areas of a typical under-carriage brake line system get to where they need replacing to pass State Inspection].

I'm liking the sound of that stuff. Regular auto parts store or was this a paint shop item?

Have they improved the Rust-Fix? The last one I bought said that it had to be protected from any type of moisture contact for at least 24 hours and to allow it to cure for that amount of time before coating over it. For me, I had to do at least 2 applications before it changed most of the rust over. I also found that paint alone didn't seem to protect it very well, but a couple of coats of the Rust-Fix, covered by the rubberized undercoating, covered by a few good coats of paint did a reasonable job.

This is sounding tougher than I hoped for. Luckily I'm not in the salted rusted belt of the country. Best of luck guys

jdq,

You can also use a lawn sprinkler at the end of a hose and drag it along under your car to rinse the road salt off. Like this one:
