Vibration, Steering Wandering (above 60, below 80mph) *Help*
I know the subject of vibration has been covered a million times, but even through searching I could not find what I needed. I've listed my experiences as in detail as possible. Any useful information is appreciated!
0-64mph
There is a slight vibration from what feels like the front half of the car, and it'* most noticable through the steering wheel, it increases as speeds increase. Up until 65-70mph, it'* not all that noticable, but you can see and feel the steering wheel vibrate, as well as the front passenger seat.
65-83mph
Now, when you hit about 65mph, it starts to become much more noticable. By 70-72mph, the car is vibrating much more noticably, as you can see and feel in the steering wheel, and the sun visors, passenger seat, etc.
Also, sometimes when driving past 70mph, the steering starts to twitch left and right on it'* own and becomes extremely light/loose, causing the car to wander, and feel fairly unstable at those high speeds.
84+ mph
Past 84mph or so, the vibration and the wandering seem to become much less noticable.
So Far:
- I Have 4 Goodyear Assurance Comfortred tires on, with very little wear. I haven't driven much since they were new (about 10K mi), no not noticing any unusual wear patterns yet.)
- I Have had the tires balanced twice, supposively the first time (according to the previous owner/dealer, it seemed to help, but since I never drove the car, I can't say I know what the severity of the symptoms were beforehand.)
- The tires have been rotated more than once, didn't really do anything.
- The passenger front wheel bearing has been replaced. Both are now in good condition, no play when I had the car jacked up.
- The brake rotors have been turned, seems to have gotton rid of the horrible shake when braking above 70mph.
- The struts are in good shape, they are not that old, and they work smoothly and quietly over bumps.
- Suspension components seem to be in good shape, with no strange noises over bumps, no play in any direction in the wheels.
-The rims appear to be in good condition, no noticable damage.
- Transmission is is good shape (except the pressure control solenoid at times, ugh), and all the mounts to the engine and transmission appear to be in good condition (doubt even a bad mount would cause wandering though).

O.K. my Bonne vibrates because the guy that had the car before me rotated the tires wrong and the tires wear wrong and thats my problem, I need tires. In your case with the speed issue, it may very well be the tires werent high speed balanced, especially if you dont feel it at low speeds, that is the cheapest fix first.

marquette97 - Did you ever find out what was causing the vibration? I have a 97 Riv with the exact same symtoms. Replaced wheel bearings, brakes & rotors, trans mount, still cannot find what the cause is.

i'm hoping it'* just the tires. the twitching can't be the pump because it does it even if i shut the car off at 70mph. i'll find out when i get new tires this week.

Did the tires fix your problem? I have a very similar vibration problem with my 98 SSEi and would love to know if you've fixed yours.
I put new BFGs on - no luck.
Put my brothers 96 bonnie wheels on my car - no luck. (His car didn't vibrate with my wheels either).
New driver side wheel bearing - no luck.
New driver side axel - no luck.
New rotors - no luck.
New outter tie rod - no luck.
I can see a slight shake in the driver side front wheel when I run the car up to speed on the rack. Very slight, but noticable.
Pretty aggitating. I love the smooth bonnie ride... so this stinks.
Any thoughts??? Anybody?

sorry, off topic but funny
thats good.
but back to topic,
i had a vibration similar to yours on my 97. my problem ended up being a bent rim. i know you said they "appear ok", but, has that been addressed any further on you car yet?
