Transmission tends to go into neutral on stop when cold
My Bonne when first started in the day will usually not go into gear unless I run the engine at 2K rpm'* for about 15 seconds, OR, I put her into 1st gear.
Until she'* warmed up she tends to pop out of gear into neutral at a stop.
Luckily, SO FAR, I can always get her into gear by moving into 1st, then into drive. It seems a small inconvenience...
After she'* warmed up, she doesn't have this condition; she shifts PERFECTLY at all other times and through all gears.
What could be causing this? She doesn't need a new transmission?

What do you mean pop out of gear?
Does the shifter actually move into neutral, or the shifter is still in drive, but the car will not move and acts like it is in neutral?
Have you checked the transmission fluid lately? what color is it, and does it smell burnt? also, have you ever had the transmission serviced / flushed?

Fluid color and level normal (checked running and hot) I have no idea when it was last changed. I have no idea if the tranny was ever serviced.
I come to a stop in the car with it in overdrive and without any noise or indication I press the gas the engine revs the car is not in gear. It may suddenly catch or in other words, go into gear on its own, but I can coax it into gear by shifting into 1st, not 2nd mind you, but 1st always does it.
I tell ya, the car shifts PERFECTLY at speed. I've driven it 2,000 miles and never once did it shift improperly at speed or fail from a stop after it was warmed up good.

Yup, i had / have the same problem in my 94 SE.
http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...=68435&start=0
What i found to help was to do any other Pan drop and fluid and filter change. along with adding Lucas transmission Fix stuff.
I Also put a adjustable Modulator in and turns it up to shift firmer. doing all of that made it better but did not stop it from doing it all the time.
One other thing it could still be is the front Trans/motor mount. Others have had going into gear problems or weird shifting into gear problems when that goes.
Best thing to know what going on is to read throw my thread and there is some good Info others have posted in there on What and why my trans may or is doing it.

Sounds like an O-Ring inside the trans has some leak down.... There are several O_Rings in the Trans that can wear or harden over time and allow the Fluid pressure to escape... Chances are this will get worse... But you can try what Bandit did and it may buy you some time...

Wow, bandit, you had exactly the same problem I wasn't able to find your post though when I searched!
jr's3800, "Chances are this will get worse"
That'* exactly what I did not want to hear coming from you jr'* I'm going to find a good towing company, perhaps AAA and be ready for the worst.
If I can't get her into gear by going into 1st, then she'* gonna get donated to one of those organizations that takes cars I'm not putting a new transmission in her.
If I can get 6 months out of this car I will be happy she was only $1400 cash.

My daughter'* 91 Grand Prix would do the same thing. At the advice of a local mechanic, I tried some SeaFoam Transtune that he felt could free up sticky valves. That solved the problem, although I'm sure it will eventually give out. Sold the car to a friend'* daughter, and it still working ok. It'* been 2 years since the original problem. Adding a can before fluid changes seems to be keeping it on the road. It has over 250k miles on it. You may want to give that a try. A can will run you in the area of $6.
