On my 2001 the motor with the gear on it is in the centre of the roof, right behind the sunroof opening. You have to drop the headliner which means you have to pull the grab handle, visors, overhead console, A pillars, B pillars and possible the C pillars. Pain in the butt, which is why I had a trim shop do it. They charged me $50 to drop the headliner, align the gear and adjust the sunroof position.

I did not want to risk damaging the headliner by just forcing it down without removing all the stuff that holds it up. You don't have to remove the headliner, just drop it down.

Hmm, thanks again. Sounds like it'* either a job for a long weekend or a trim shop.

If you do drop the headliner, make sure you check for good connections of the sunroof drain tubes to the drain holes in each corner. These are prone to popping off which results in water leaks. You might want to add tie straps or even small hose clamps to ensure a robust connection. You will see what I mean as soon as you drop the headliner.

Default Sunroof issues

I hope you were able to get your sunroof issues resolved. My 2002 SSEI with 74,000 miles has a sunroof that doesn't close properly. A piece of the track on the passenger side broke which also happened at 14,000 miles. I took it to the dealer and they said I need to replace the track to the tune of $1,350. I am very angry that this is the second time that the same issue has occurred. I called GM'* customer service to try and get some help with the cost. The agent called me last week and said since there wasn't a recall and the car was out of warranty GM would be unable to offer any assistance.

Hello all, this is my first post. At the risk of reviving an old (but relevant) thread, I have a similar problem with my 2001 sunroof.

I dropped the headliner yesterday because I had the proper GM instructions and was sad to learn that I still can't get the sunshade out (want to repair the dangling cloth). But that'* not the crux of the problem, only a symptom of the leaking sunroof.

Like the OP, I have full travel, forward, backward, and vent position, however in the closed position, the driver'* side is low at the rear. I know you're thinking that I need to adjust the position of the glass with the big torx adjuster screws, but not so fast. You see, the glass is snug, but the driver'* side has vertical slop whereas the passenger side does not.

I have observed the operation carefully and found there is a piece that engages a cam mechanism that raises and holds the glass in the vent (and I assume the closed position). By cycling between vent and closed, it'* easy to see this part in operation. But as I said, I have about a half inch or more of play on the driver'* side whereas the passenger side does not move at all.

What I am wondering is if the cable on the driver'* side could be traveling less forward than the passenger side, causing the lack of vertical position holding. I can attach pictures if anyone wants to see what I am talking about.

Thanks for any advice on this. While I love the way the Bonny drives and handles, it has been a nightmare of endless and costly repairs, most of which I have performed on my own. What a shame.

I haven't yet solved my issue. I've been more or less preventing leaks by proping the roof up with a chunk of foam, but I fear there'* some other problems with it now (a lot of crap rattling around in there now). :(
