try putting it in nuetral and see if it starts.
I assume you mean you put on the lights and they were not dim?
Also try another key, could be the Vats system.

Or, have somebody holding the key in the crank position and smack the starter with a hammer. If it cranks after hitting it, you need a starter. You may have to hit it repeatedly, but no more than 10-15 times. And don't break the case on it either, smack it but don't wail on it.

The same thing happened to me last night but I did not think of putting it in N.
I loosened the negative battery cable and then retightened it and the car cranked?

if VATS was an issue the security light should come on (assuming security light comes on when it is running fine)

2 systems (to simplify) can prevent the starter circuit from working in an INTENDED manner.
P/N safety switch: When misadjusted can cause the car to fail to start if it dosen't KNOW it'* in a safe position (P or N). This is why you should try a N start.
VATS or PASSKEY (resistor pellet in the key). Clean the pellet with alcohol, clean the contacts in the switch that mate with it with a Qtip and alcohol. Try another key.
Knowing the state of that Security light would be helpful (as requested). The hammer trick is for after the first two items here are ruled out (Vats and P/N switch).

Clean the keys off just to be sure. Alcohol was recommended for me--dip the key and put it in to clean contacts inside the steering column.
Next time watch for the security light to just stay on solid no matter what you do with the key.

my '92 did the same thing to me several times this year, all dash and dome lights were fine, starter did nothing. turned out being the battery post cables on the positive were slightly corroded and not tight enough, because there'* two pads held down by one bolt, there was corrosion between them, bad connection on one, the rest is history....
