Default RPM Limit?

I was disappointed to find out my car was governed at 108 MPH. Now, I've been hearing a lot about RPM limits as well, and while I don't think I've reached my RPM governor, I'm sure I've got one. What is it?

RPM Limiter is something that prevents your engine some being reved into the engine speeds (RPM'*) that can cause serious damage to your engine.

If you have it in park, rev the engine like crazy I think the car starts to make a noise around 4-5k RPM'*. Plus, it kinda starts to shake as well. Though, having it in Drive it wont do that (of course, duh), at least mine didnt, which is a 97 SE like yours.

GM designed their newer six cylinders and brought them out in the late 80'*/early 90'* timeframe. First thing they found was because they revved up so quick some people were blowing them. So they put the rev limiters in the programming on pard and neutral. It cuts out the spark to a few of the cylinders in a manner that won't hurt the motor...but won't allow it to rev too high and blow either.

It'* added piece of mind so that if your dog were to sit on the accelerator, it wouldn't blow the engine. What? No, i'm not saying i shot the dog after it did that to my truck. Why would you ask that?

Limited at 108 MPH?

I seem to remember a trek across the desert to Los Wages a few years ago that was a bit in excess of 108!

I doan theenk so, at least on the '99s.

All right, I know what a limiter is. I don't know *when* the limiter kicks in.

(And yes, my speed governor is 108 MPH; I can't get it any faster without the engine stopping itself by dropping the RPM'*. It'* kinda cruel having it so low, but I guess it'* so people like me don't wind up with our Bonnevilles in or around a tree.)

Sign...not that any of us NEED to go faster than 108, but try this. (Thanks again Bill)

If 108 happened at WOT in 3rd gear. get to about 100mph and let off enough for it to kick into 4th. Then keep on going, it might go over. Or maybe it'* only an SSEi thing.
