reading hot but not running hot
My 97 SE is telling me its running around 260-280 but when it says this it doesn't drive any different and with the hood popped you can tell its clearly not overheating. I replaced the coolant temp gauge underneath the thermostat and the car still says its running hot. Does any one have an idea why its doing this? The other gauges work so its not that the cluster is tweaking out and other then the tranny issues it has the car is running exactly like it did before it started doing this three days ago.
thanks in advance

If are in RI and do not have a chance to get it looked at before this weekend, maybe you have a chance to meet up with a bunch of locals in Natick for a gathering.
I'll have my scanner on hand.

IRRC, the local auto shops only scan for codes (code reader). I've never been to one that could scan for engine parameters (scanner). You really DO need to hook up with someone who has a scanner if at all possible.
It certainly won't hurt to have a free code scan, to see if you've thrown a code, but a scanner can tell you if you really do have engine temp problems or maybe lead you to bad sensors.
