I just did the R134 conversion on my MINT 89 Trans Am that only has 42k. I consulted 2 A/C specialists and they BOTH said just vent what'* left of the R12 and then use the Interdynamics kit at Wal-mart for $34.99. It comes with all the fittings, hose with gauge and 3 cans of 134 and oil, and a instructional CD-ROM. I did it in under 30 min and it works great! It even quieted my compressor.

I think we all know that venting R-12 is illegal. But people still do it, just like DWI, underage smoking, street racing, non stock clear tails, faking a SMOG test, blah, blah, blah... And frankly, the little that is left that does get vented will not make a difference because compared to 10 years ago, there are barely any R-12 systems left. In the long run what is worse, keep feeding an R-12 system that only leaks it, or leak R134 that is better for the environment?
No one around here will even suck r-12 anymore because they dont want to deal with it. And sure, if you suck out an R-12 system, replace all the components, and then put R-134 in, of course it is going to work good. That is like saying that your newly rebuilt motor runs better than one with 400,000mi on it. It better!
My trans am performs just as good with the 134 as it did with the r12. This is on a black car, with black interior, T-tops and a hatch to fight against. For a car that hardly gets driven 1,500mi a year, and only has to deal with 85deg summers, the retrofit kit worked GREAT!
Fock, I know people that have added 134 to R-12 and for years have had great results. Do what you people want, but for $34.99 you cant beat the conversion kit.
You all might think Im talking out of my ***, but how many of you have a brother that is a certified Auto A/C tech? He used to deal with this daily, now he flies jets!

Regardless of the legality of venting R12, I'd never want any traces to remain in the system. I don't want problems down the road because I have R12 in my R134a.

My 95 has never been pumped down, I have given it a couple of shots of 134 over the years... It gets cold after you drive a little bit, but not bone chilling cold that it used to... I want to have the system charged professionaly though, would you reccomend replacing the reciever/drier and the orifice tube... Or should they be fine? I am at 130,000 florida miles so you can imagine how much I use the AC... Any info would be great fuddy...
Sorry Bill I had to jack the thread for a minute..
If you have added R-134a a few times already, then I would recommend adding some PAG oil next time you top it off with R-134a. It is important to get the amount of R-134a in the system correct, though. The most accurate way is to remove all of the old and measure the new exactly. However, when topping it off, the best way is to use pressure gauges on the low and high end to ensure the proper pressures, along with a thermometer in the vents.
Remember, too much or too little R-134a can hamper cooling.

Yes Big Brother made it illegal to just dump the freon into the air, Now ask yourself the next time your driving down the road going by a big business, Whats that **** they are pumping into the air?? Who cares about a little R12 floating around, NOT ME... Maybe some freaks thinking the world is going to go away because of R12 in the air. I think we have alot more stuff to worry about.... Terrorists that wear Towels on their head'* and other'*.

R-12 does nothing to air quality at ground level, it destroys stratospheric ozone, which protects everyone from the harmful rays of the sun. The more you destroy, the more skin cancer you are going to get.
