I'll let you know soon. I'm going to be doing the same thing this week.
I acquired a mirror from a junkyard, but it was the wrong color. I sanded it, primered it, and repainted with several coats of Krylon after masking off the black strip and the glass.
As the old mirror was ripped clean off the car I didn't have any trouble removing the old one.
There is an oblong triangular piece (called an applique according to the local Pontiac house), and two nuts that hold it in from inside the door. The applique and nuts were less than $10.
Looks pretty straightforward to me. Remove the door panel, slice the plastic sheet on the inside of the panel as little as you can, put the mirror and rubber gasket on from the outside, install the applique with the two nuts that hold the mirror on, connect the plug and reinstall the door panel.
Nothing to it right?
The really tough part? Trying to put parts on it as fast as she can knock 'em off!

as stated above. the 2 nuts are 10mm and you have to get your arm up throught the hole where the speaker was. the 2 bolts from the mirror assemby are at an angle and there is little space. It will test your patience, but after you do it once it will get better. (some of us have had to do it many times )
just remember getting the door panel off, there are 2 bolts and the rest are push pins. One is under the cap at the top of the grab handle and one is behind the door light. it just pops out of the door.

At this point rather than blow a head gasket I just took my refund and left.
I'll try to see if my retainer piece from the inside of the door is still inside my door in the next couple of days.
Grrrrr.
