Go in through your right front wheelwell (tire off, inner liner off), and you'll see it sticking out the back of the motor pointing towards the firewall. Just above the oil filter.

Buy the factory service manuals from www.helminc.com
Do an ebay search on 1996 Bonneville Manual. Many Factory manuals at the bottom of the page.

tpulliam79,
I actually just replaced the one on my 96 SE today and took some pics. I bought the part from Advance for $20 and it took me about 25 minutes to replace it (including jacking up the car and removing the tire and inner liner). I used a small screwdriver to remove the wire clip and channel locks to unscrew the old sending unit. Hope these pictures help.
Screwdriver pointing to the sending unit:

From inside fender well with tire removed. My finger is pointing to where I unscrewed the sensor from:

If you're long enough you could just jack up the front end of the car a bit and change it by going through the top engine bay. This was much easier for me.
