Default My Car

OK, it seems I need to clear up some things. I believe my car is Canadian although it does have everything in both metric and standard.

I leave my sentinal switch in the OFF position at all times, After I start the car I can turn the sentinal switch on and then off and the headlights will go off.

DAYLIGHT CONDITIONS WITH SENTINAL SWITCH IN OFF POSITION

Remote starter - park lights come on when car starts, when car is put into gear the daytime///driving lights come on.

Key start - no lights on until car is put into gear.

DUSK/EVENING Conditions with SENTINAL In OFF POSITION

Remote starter - Park lights, headlights and fog lights, if fog switch is on, turn on when car starts. When key is put in ignition and turned to on position the radio will turn on.

Key start - All Lights turn on as well as power to radio.

In evening/night conditions with sentinal in OFF position once the car is shut off the lights will remain on for approx. 30 secs then shut off and radio remains on for about 10 - 15 minutes.

Before remote starter was installed the car did same so I know it not a bad remote install. I believe that when the sentinal switch is in OFF position, the headlights, parklights should be OFF regardless of day/dusk/evening conditions. If the sentinal switch is in the ON position the lights shoudl come on and remain ON for a predetermined time after the car is shut off to allow for exit of vehicle in safe manner.

My question was and still is, do I need to replace the headlight switch or is this normal operation. IF YOU HAVE SENTINAL SWITCH ON YOUR VEHICLE and you start your car with sentinal in OFF position in daylight conditions, do your headlights/parklights come on when you start your car (KEY OR REMOTE START if u have), or do they just come on when you put car in gear. If lights come on then I have normal operation, BUT if your lights don't come on till you put in gear than I need to replace switch. IF you start vehicle in dusk/evening conditions with sentinal in off position and lights remain off until put into gear, my switch is bad.

I don't mean to sound sarcastic but it really is simple question I think.

I appreciate all your help. I hope I have * P E L L E D it out in simple enough terms.

This is kinda odd. My 93SSEi and the 93SSE next door don't have DRL'*. Is this a Canadian thing, even as old as 93? All Bonnevilles were built in the US, but may be different for Canadian vs. US cars. All Bonnevilles are a mix of metric and standard, or at least all 93'* are.

Assuming the DRL operation is normal (for the Canadian reason), I'd say the rest of your question IS a problem. It looks as if your twilight sentinel is not turning off. During the daytime, I have no lights at all, unless I manually turn them on by pulling the switch. At night, with Twilight sentinel off, I have no lights in any mode unless I turn them on. With twilight sentinel ON at night, my lights come on when the ignition is ON, regardless of the car running or being in gear. The 93 SSE next door does EXACTLY the same.

Quit weirding me out!

A couple of things don't make sense.

First, the parking lights should not come on by themselves when you start the car, unless the wiring has been modified. Second, if the sentinel is off, none of the lights should come on until the car is in gear, then you should get daytime running lamps. Also, the lights should not stay on after you turn off the car, if the sentinel is off.

The radio is separate; that should stay on for 10 min or until a door is opened.

So if your lights are coming on when the sentinel is off (other than when you put it into drive, those are the DRL), something is wrong.

What happens if you turn the sentinel switch on?

To properly diagnose this problem you need to run a couple of tests per the service manual.

The likely cause could be:

1. The sentinel control switch or the output wiring from it is shorted to ground
2. The sentinel control switch is bad
3. The lamp control module is bad.

The lamp control module is a computer that controls all of the lights.

OK, I guess I need to replace the switch. Thank you Willwren, That is what I originally asked but I guess I screwed it up in the wording of the post. I hate it when you can't SAY what the problem is ya gotta put it into words. LOL

Thank you as well FuddyDuddy, OH and by the way the reason the park lights come on when remote starter starts car is because of the remote starter itself. It is designed that way to A) alert you the vehicle is started, B) To alert you of where your vehicle is at night after the party Joking. The park lights will also flash once when you lock doors, flash twice when you unlock doors, flash ten times when you remotely open the trunk, flash two times when you set it to auto start after two hours and flash four times when you set hte auto start for four hours. I KNOW I KNOW to much info LOL Sorry.

THANKS to all the posters and members for all the help, only been a member for a few weeks and already solved many a problem and I'm sure many more to come LOL, NOT, I DRIVE A BONNEVILLE SO it CAN'T HAVE problems!!!!!!!

I think I may have a faulty switch because when I turn either the sentinal switch or the dimmer switch it is spotty bright/dim/bright soemtimes nuttin at all. So I guess me call the wrecking yard. FOR THE SWITCH, not to pick up the car LOL.
