You would loose oil if it was a pressure loss at the crack in the sensor. At least that'* how I figure it to work?

right, so it is now logical to assume that it was simply giving false readings.

Over time the pressure can destroy the internal seals of a sensor. Usually when they go bad they will start to seep slowly and the oil messes with the electrical inside the sensor giving you bad readings.

Like anything failure can happen in hundreds of different ways.
