Malfunctioning temperature gauge 1992 sse
Hi Guys,
For the last few days my temp gauge has been jumping around quite a bit and very erratically. The car has plenty of coolant, no leaks that I can see and I do not smell antifreeze so I assume it'* related to the gauge and/or sensor. Could the coolant temperature sensor be malfunctioning? The temp goes up to about 200 degrees and then will jump to 225...then 240...then back to 200. I bled it a little using the screw on top of the thermostat housing thinking there might be some air trapped in there but it did not make a difference and the car does not appear to be on the verge of overheating. Any ideas? The gauge usually sits at just below 200 and will occasionally creep up to 215 if I'm idling in traffic. I am using a 180 thermostat.

Must be something going around. I had a similar problem with my 93 SSE this week. The temp gauge is now working fine (I did nothing), but the fuel gauge started to wander around. In my case I may have a ground issue (haven't had time to look into it yet!). If the only gauge affected is the temp gauge, you might start with the temp sensor. If your oil pressure gauge (and boost gauge, if you had one) started acting up, BillBoost37 says there is a known problem on a circuit card in the instrument panel - you'll have to do a search to find the data. Search on BillBoost37 and pcb.
